Abstract:

Research and development activities conducted over the past sixteen years have led from the discovery that commercially pure berylium is an alloy to the development of new berylium products having properties tailored to specialized applications. The path has been through understanding of the impurity reactions occurring and application of chemical controls and heat-treatment procedures to commercial production. In this report, the research efforts that have brought us to our present level of understanding of these reactions and their effects on mechanical properties of beryllium are traced and our current understanding of this field is summarized and assessed. Lastly, some of the grades of beryllium that have recently become available or are presently being developed are described and discussed briefly. Author
