Abstract:

A discussion of an experimental study performed on the TRISOPS plasma device is given. The TRISOPS experiment uses two conical theta pinch guns to heat the plasma. A brief history of the theoretical principles on which the experiment is based is presented, followed by a discussion of the experimental work. This work is divided into three parts. The first part constitutes a detailed description of the experimental device. Experimental parameters are investigated and the effect of these parameters on the plasma is described. The second part contains the study of plasma produced by a single gun. Strong experimental evidence is given to support a force-free, collinear plasma theory. The third part presents the results of studies of colliding plasmoids. Experimental evidence of a deep magnetic well in the external guide field, formed by currents flowing in the plasma, is given. The size of the well as a function of experimental parameters is discussed. Use of the force free, collinear model in discussing the observed interaction supports the model. Author
