Although TiO2wax liners are used in U. S. large caliber guns to reduce erosion, the erosion-reducing mechanisms of these liners is still under investigation. Two sets of investigators found a correlation between specific heat of the metal oxide and its ability to reduce wear. There was no evidence in either report that time required for the metal oxide particle to absorb heat was taken into account. We have calculated the time required for the average temperature of metal oxides tested as wear reducing additives to reach steady-state. Up to a diameter of 10 micron, thermal equilibrium is reached before the particles reach the section of the apparatus where erosion is measured. Author
