Abstract:

SMART is an achronym for Supervisor for the Maintenance and Allocation of Recursive Tasks. SMART was designed initially as an executive function within a data-base management system. Characteristically, data-base management systems involve the complex manipulation of large amounts of core and disk storage. Because the size of a program often determines the quality of service from a timesharing monitor, or even accessibility to the system, SMART was designed to load the smallest program subset and expand operationally to some specified maximum size in response to emergent needs, allocating core and disk space, performing file maintenance functions, and adjusting the size of the program dynamically according to storage requirements and storage availability.
