Abstract:
Studies in assisted circulation have been directed toward the basic physiology occurring during various forms of circulatory assist systems. A technique for continuous monitoring of left ventricular volume was developed and applied to observations during heart bypass. An extensive study of the Army Pulsatile Blood Pump included changes in hemodynamics, metabolic studies, serum enzymes, blood elements, catecholamines and other amines. A second area related to restoration of circulation following prolonged ischemic arrest included development of a practical animal model to test techniques of preservation during circulatory arrest.
