A research project, designed to explore the interface between libraries and extralibrary information systems is described. Major objectives were to establish the present relationships of libraries to other elements of information activity in the Department of Defense and other federal agencies to review the factors giving rise to existing pattersns and to determine the nature of a fully-integarated library and information system. The findings indicate that dual networks of libraries and extra-library information programs presently exist in the federal government. Since FLC and COSATI share responsibility and concern for the development of comprehensive library and information networks, it is concluded that joint activity will be required to resolve the roles of libraries and extra-library systems and to establish optimum interfacing arrangements.
