Abstract:
The first thermomechanical spectra of two new carborane-siloxane polymers containing 5-boron carborane cages in the backbone are reported and discussed. The polymers are the homopolymer, HO-SiCH32-CB5H5C-SiCH32-OnH and the random copolymer of the above with twenty mole percent of its 10-boron meta carborane analogue -SiCH32-CB10H10C-SiCH32-On. The mechanical spectra about 1 cps were determined from -180C to 625C to -180C via the semimicro thermomechanical technique of torsional braid analysis. The Tgs indicate an unusually high degree of chain flexibility for a polymer with such bulky groups in its backbone. Their thermal stability in both air and nitrogen were studied. Author
