Abstract:

The economic consequences of the decisions taken by engineers with regard to the protection of roads against freezing are of considerable magnitude. But the entire protection against freezing of the total road network would be so costly that it would appear to be impossible to envisage, at least in the near future. The systematic use of thaw barriers has consequences which are much more difficult to evaluate but which are equally difficult to accept. One is therefore necessarily led to setting up a hierarchy within the road network and of providing an entire series of classes of roads ranging from those which will be totally protected from freezing and those upon which it will frequently be necessary to impose traffic restrictions.
