Microdensitometric film reduction, analysis, and display techniques were applied to solar surface radiance and stellar spectral data. Hydrogen-alpha photographs of a solar flare event were converted to isophote contour plots, from which brightness solids were measured by planimetry, and radiance profiles read along selected lines. Solar granulation was observed isophotometrically with two different types of microdensitometric scanner-printer, and density histograms of the granular structure measured with the aid of a pulse height analyzer. Photographically-recorded spectra of the core and outer envelope plasmas of a star were put on magnetic tape in position register for differencing by digital computer. Author
