A method is presented for analyzing the single degree of freedom, nonlinear rolling motion of finned missiles. A nonlinear least squares fitting procedure is developed which is amenable to extracting the coefficients of linear and nonlinear roll moment terms from the rolling motion of missiles exhibiting roll lock-in, roll break-out, roll speed-up and combinations thereof. These phenomena and the second order differential equation describing them are sufficiently nonlinear to require a special application of the standard, nonlinear least squares procedures for fitting ordinary differential equations to observed data. The equations employed in this global nonlinear least squares application and their relation to the roll phenomena in question are presented in this report. Author
