Abstract:
Yeasts belonging to 6 genera were isolated from sewage and tested for their ability to use 15 hydroxy derivatives of phenol and benzoic acid as carbon source. The majority were able to produce colonies on at least 10 of the simple monophenol derivatives tested. Salicylic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and gentisic acid were the most commonly used benzoic acid derivatives and resorcinol and phloroglucinol the most frequently metabolized phenols. However, there was no obvious relationship between the utilization of these compounds and the generic classification of the yeasts. Author
