A review is presented of a fracture-mechanics approach to thermal stress fracture of brittle solids. The theory assumes thermal stress fracture occurring under essentially a constant strain condition, and the results show that resistance to thermal shock is a function of physical parameters and initial flaw size. Implications of the theory are discussed and illustrated by experimental data and practical examples. Recommendations are made for the development of materials with superior thermal shock resistance.
