The purpose of the paper is to investigate the action of the hand, arm, and shoulder complex when that complex is required to perform a definite task. The motion under study is that motion encountered when the human operator is required to turn a crank. The cranking motion is in a horizontal plane which passes through the shoulder joint. The subject is required to keep the arm in this plane of motion throughout the task performance. The moments and forces to which the arm mechanism is subjected are then analytically evaluated. Author
