Abstract:
Experiments were conducted for measurement of sliding traction and optical film thickness in the 41 elliptical contact of a spherical bearing roller and a flat disk. A total of seven advanced engine lubricants were tested comprising three ester based lubricants, a modified polyphenyl ether, a synthetic napthenic hydrocarbon and two synthetic paraffinics with and without anti-wear additives. Theoretical analysis was conducted which is capable of predicting increased film thickness reduction at high speed-viscosity parameters. The role of oil-air surface tension on elastohydrodynamics was defined in terms of the film replenishment in the rolling track. Author
