Abstract:

The objective of the study was to develop effective and responsive methods for using interchangeable and substitute IS item information through the Army supply system down to the user level. The most severe IS problems were found at direct support units DSUs, where computer capacities were too small to effectively interrelate records for IS items. The procedure recommended for this problem at DSUs is to record any two-way interchangeable item on stock records and to stock it in the warehouse as though it actually were the prime item. It would appear that almost every problem of IS records at DSUs could be virtually eliminated by this method.
