In an effort to extend the upper limit of the falling sphere type of upper atmospheric density measuring system a program was conducted to develop accelerometry having sensitivity in the range 10 to the -8th power to 10 to the -2 power. A potentially low-cost triaxal accelerometer was developed and fabricated using highly loaded piezoelectric bimorphs. To match the bimorphs into the electrical system, and to amplify their low signal voltages, extremely low-noise solid state electronic circuitry had to be developed. Because of the high sensitivity of the sensors used, particular care had to be taken iin seismically isolating the test aparatus to reduce input accelerations due to building noise, traffic, wind. etc. Author
