An Approximation Procedure for the Calculation of Transient State Availability.

The primary objective of the paper is to develop an alternate procedure to present methods of transient availability calculation. To do this discrete density approximations are substituted for continuous probability distributions, and the sum is formed of all mutually exclusive event probabilities that lead to an operational system at some future time. This approach is not limited by the type of repair or failure distribution exhibited by the system. With this procedure it is demonstrated that oscillations exist for availability functions that have failure and repair distributions other than exponential. Methods are discussed that can reduce the amplitude of these oscillations and improve the over-all availability of the system. Author
