The purpose of Army Spectrometric Oils Analysis Program ASOAP is to serve as a diagnostic tool in determining when an oil wetted component is about to fail before actual component failure without having to disassemble the equipment. However there is a supplementary reason for analyzing used oil and that is simply to determine its suitability as a lubricant. The objectives of the study were to develop a proposed check list procedure for the research and design of an ASOAP experiment, to develop a procedure for the implementation of an ASOAP data collection system including pertinent chemical and physical tests, and to illustrate applicable statistical techniques chi-squared test, cross-sectional analysis and the method of least squares in analyzing ASOAP data. Sample data from the TH-55A helicopter is used for this illustration. Author
