Abstract:

The paper presents a method of optimally allocating tolerances to the dimensions on a piecepart, considering correlation and a hierarchy of importance among the dimensions. Present methods used by the designer for specifiying tolerances do not consider the degree of correlation among dimensions common to a piecepart. This correlation is based on the fact that the dimensions on a piecepart may be manufactured by the same piece of machinery, by the same machinest, or by the same process. Neglecting correlation is equivalent to throwing away valuable information that otherwise could be used for allocating tolerances in a more optimal manner. The method of solution presented here is based on a numerical integration technique, in conjunction with a dynamic programming algoithm.
