Possible approaches to gun-barrel cooling were investigated. Experimental data were obtained for the convection heat-transfer coefficient of a vortex tube in the cooling of steel rods arranged internally to and coaxially with the vortex tube. The XM140 30mm automatic gun was used. Current theories of electrostatic cooling were experimentally tested in a vacuum. The results obtained indicate that vortex cooling of gun barrels appears feasible and that electrostatic cooling appears to be dependent upon the existence of a gaseous medium surrounding the object to be cooled.
