Abstract:

A device for detemining the strain-time behaviour of metals in compression is described. A cylindrical metal specimen forms one element of a coaxial capacitor which is coupled to one of two tuned variable capacitor circuits. The increase in capacitance of the specimen capacitor during deformation is measured as a voltage change on a cathode-ray oscilloscope. Typical experimental results are given which in conjunction with stress-time relationship can be used for determining the dynamic stress-strain behaviour of metals over a wide range of strain rates.
