Using a simple approximation the influence of radiation and equilibrium reactions on flow variables in front of and behind a strong normal shock is investigated. The gray gas approximation is used the equilibrium reactions taken into account are dissociation and ionization. For weak radiation an analytical solution is given, whereas in the region of medium radiation influence the presented results are obtained numerically. Because of the limitation made here to equilibrium reactions, the critical case of very strong radiation must be excluded.
