A proposed two-year research program, to include both theoretical and experimental studies, would be directed toward development of an electron-beam-controlled CO2 laser operable at pressures up to 10 atmospheres. Evidence of the feasibility of such a project is provided by various analyses and calculations, including a new method of defining pressure scaling relationships, and by a preliminary complement of design and operating parameters based on these analyses and on current, related experiments. Results obtained from specific examples indicate output laser energies of 37 and 570 joulesliter are possible for 1 and 10 atm respectively. Most critical problem at present is lack of definitive and accurate data on optical window materials and geometries at the higher pressures, but three materials appear promising for this application.
