The symmetry of the structure of the as-quenched omega phase, which is formed during the decomposition of b.c.c. beta solid solutions in Zr and Ti-base alloys, was shown to change from 6-fold to 3-fold with increasing solute content. These observations indicate that as the undercooling beneath the Ms curve for the beta to omega transformation decreases, the magnitude of the displacement of the atoms away from their b.c.c. positions during the transformation also decreases.
