Abstract:

A laboratory system has been developed for the gas phase production of diatomic metal-oxides, and a program has been initiated for the spectroscopic study of these molecules using the techniques of laser excited fluorescence. Metal-oxides were produced from the following metals Al, Ba, Be, Mg, Fe, Pb, and Sn. These molecules were produced chemically in a flowing gas system by mixing metal vapor with an oxidant. Chemiluminescence invariably accompanied the formation of metal-oxides in this system. Laser excited fluorescence was shown to be useful for determining molecular constants, studying collisional processes, and for measuring radiative lifetimes and quenching cross sections. Author
