Abstract:

The author visited Japan during the period August 31 through September 18 to attend the 1971 Association Internationale pour le Calcul Analogique AICA Symposium on the Simulation of Complex Systems and to find out something about the state of the art in numerical analysis and computer software in Japan. In fact, he learned about a rather wide variety of research in various aspects of applied mathematics and computer science. The readers interested in numerical analysis may wish to consult the reports of visits to Kyoto University, Nihon University, and the Institute for Statistical Mathematics . Those interested in computer science and applications software will be most interested in the work at Fujitsu Limited and the work at the Electrotechnical Laboratory. The discussions during the writers visit to the Central Research Institute of the Electric Power Industry centered around the mathematical solution of problems in hydraulics and coastal engineering. The AICA meeting dealt with various aspects of simulation and analog computation. Author
