Abstract:

An inexpensive air cathode is being developed for use in acid electrolyte fuel cells. The electrode consists of a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene bonded platinum black catalyst loaded at 1 to 3gmsq ft supported on a low cost porous graphite sheet, eliminating the need for a metal grid. Test procedures for characterizing electrode structure, and performance including conductivity, pore size distribution, surface area, oxygen-air gain and individual electrode polarization measurements are discussed in the report. Cathodes containing 2gmsq ft of platinum with small amounts of graphite as a bulking agent yield similar results. Cost estimates are presented. Author
