Abstract:

Let A and B be matrices of sizes m by t and t by n, respectively, with elements in a field F. Let xl, ..., xt denote t independent indeterminates over F and define X diagxl, ..., xt. Then AXB Y is a matrix of size m by n such that every element of Y is a linear form in xl, ... , xt over F. The present paper investigates the converse proposition.
