Abstract:

An experimental technique has been developed for investigating spontaneously fissioning isomers with half-lives about or 100 nsec. The technique uses four surface barrier fission detectors in a parallel configuration. The detectors are shielded from prompt fission events and observe fission fragments from events occurring at a catcher foil which collects heavy nuclei recoiling out of the target. The flexibility of the technique is demonstrated by reporting an experiment in which the half-lives, relative excitation energies, and single-fragment kinetic energy distributions of spontaneously fissioning isomers in 237Pu were determined.
