Abstract:

Research on hydrocarbon fuel properties principally JP-7, fuel additives, and organic and inorganic contaminants in fuels is described. Analytical methods developed are presented in detail, and include a specific ion electrode method for PWA-536 in JP-7, gas chromatographic methods to fingerprint JP-7 and to detect volatile contaminants, a column chromatographic-infrared spectrophotometric method to isolate and identifly polar contaminants in JP-7, and atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods for metal naphthenates in fuels at the parts per billion level. Measurements of JP-7 heat of combustion, electrical, and other physical properties are tabulated. Bench and field studies of the depletion of fuel system icing inhibitor from JP-7 are presented. Detailed studies of a polyurethane foam degradation problem and the evaluation of a small scale test to measure thermal stability are summarized. Author
