Abstract:

The report presents the results of 30 functional ball bearing tests using AgHg-WRFE-MoSe2 composite retainers. For the most part, these tests were conducted at a bearing speed of 10,000 rpm, a bearing temperature of 600F, and a combined loading of 50-lb axial and 50-lb radial. The objectives of these tests were 1 to determine the effect on bearing life of any retainer unbalance which might be present after final machining 2 to determine an optimum bearing-retainer geometry for maximum bearing life and 3 to further develop the bearing-retainer geometry in order to increase bearing life. Lubricant material studies were also conducted using Differential Thermal Analysis and X-ray emission analysis to accurately establish modified Teflon WTFE melting points and material compositions.
