Abstract:

The report covers the theoretical schemes and experimental techniques developed, tested, and applied to the actual realization of laser-pumped infrared quantum counter IRQC operation. The experiments involve 1 the growth of a variety of single crystals which might serve as appropriate hosts for active IRQC rare earth ions 2 the measurement of radiationless relaxation times, the knowledge of which is important in optimizing the quantum efficiencies of IRQC processes, 3 spectroscopic measurements for the determination of the energy level schemes of rare earth ions in crystals which are of interest as potential IRQC materials, 4 the optimization of the c.w. operation of rhodamine 6-G and fluorescein dye lasers which are used as the optical pumps in the upconversion processes, and 5 laser-pumped IRQC experiments.
