Abstract:

The properties of a satellite-to-ground whistler mode communication link are discussed. The propagation mechanisms of a whistler mode link are examined, present knowledge concerning the performance of spaceborne transmitting ELFVLF antennas is summarized, and implications for communication systems are considered. The two major unknowns in the whistler mode communication link are the performance of a transmitting spaceborne ELFVLF antenna, and the coupling of whistler mode energy through the ionosphere into the terrestrial waveguide. An experimental program to establish link performance is recommended. Author
