Three species of plants were grown under three common regimes greenhouse, growth chamber, and field conditions and treated with sublethal applications of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid 2,4-D at different stages of growth. Pretreatment environment was found to affect growth habit and herbicide response in all species. Preliminary microscopic examinations indicate a possible relation between herbicide sensitivity and cuticle thickness as modified by environment. Investigators who cross compare plant responses from different growth habitats should take such effects into consideration. Author
