Abstract:

Two routes involving fluoralkylcopper intermediates have been used to prepare poly-1,3-phenylenehexafluorotrimethylene by the reaction of 1-iodo-3-m-iodophenylhexafluoropropane and an excess of copper, and by the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of 1,3-di-iodohexafluoropropane and 1,3-di-m-iodophenylhexafluoropropane with an excess of copper, both reactions being done in polar aprotic solvents. The preparation of the intermediate iodo compounds are described. The polymer is a brittle resin which becomes elastomeric at 30-35C, and is quite thermally stable. Extensive weight loss does not occur below 450C in air or in nitrogen. Author
