Abstract:

Research in numerical weather prediction is described at the University of Copenhagen spectral method and at the University of Helsinki empirical orthogonal functions. The Copenhagen group has succeeded in formulating a consistent set of truncation conditions for the primitive equations, reducing the large demands for computer time of the spectral method and making it possible to introduce physical effects such as condensation and radiation. At Helsinki formalisms have been developed for applying empirical orthogonal functions to numerical forecasts. Systematic errors can be reduced, random errors can be lowered and the length of useful forecast time can be extended. The possibility is pointed out of generating probable alternate forecasts which may reveal the areas of likely failure of the physical forecast and supply probable alternates. Author
