Abstract:
Prevention of a wide gap between Fleet weapons and technology depends on keeping abreast of scientific advances and applying those that can contribute to the nations defense, creating conditions that foster innovation and imaginative new approaches, providing modern laboratory and test facilities, maintaining close working relationships between civilian research staffs and officers familiar with Fleet requirements, and communicating to those with authority and funds the fundamental importance of investigation. The history of the Naval Weapons Center until 1967 known as the Naval Ordnance Test Station, or NOTS presents the conditions under which the Navy rocket program and NOTS were established. Volume 1 of the series relates the changing character of weaponry that brought the Navys rocket program and NOTS into being.
