Abstract:
Wheel loads generate pore pressures in soils when their moisture content exceeds a certain level. These pore pressures affect the development of failure zones that control interface stresses in soft soils. The differential equations of plasticity governing the geometry of failure zones have been expanded to account for pore pressures and appropriate algorithms developed for the numerical solution of these equations. Slip-line field geometries and wheel performance parameters are shown in an example for various degrees of shear mobilization and sore pressure parameters. The effect of pore pressures on wheel performance is considerable even in soils with weak pore pressure response. Author
