Abstract:
The redundancy necessary in self-checking circuits is investigated from a coding theory viewpoint. The determination of code capabilities is examined and a polarized distance technique is introduced and shown to be useful for determining the error-detectingcorrecting capabilities of binary block codes in cases where bit errors are not random, that is, not symmetric and independent. The design of combinational circuits with encoded inputs and encoded outputs is considered. For such circuits the concepts of self-testing and fault-secure are introduced circuits that are both self-testing and fault-secure are defined to be totally self-checking. Author
