Abstract:

The analysis of biaxially bent beam-columns is exceedingly complex and this problem has not yet been studied exhaustively. However, a considerable amount of research has been done in the last decade on the inelastic behavior of isolated beam-columns in biaxial bending. A review of research in this area was published in 1968 by Chen and Santathadaporn. Further work on this problem is in progress at various institutions under the sponsorship of the Column Research Council. Though the few analytical solutions reported so far show excellent agreement with test results, the labor involved in the numerical calculations limits their practical use. The designer therefore often uses the empirical interaction equations found in bridge and building specifications. It is the object of this paper to review one such equation for biaxially bent beam-columns of hollow tubular sections. Author
