Large rock fields contain fairly regular joint systems, often consisting of sets of nominally orthogonal, parallel crack surfaces. Past numerical solutions of free field ground motions induced by nuclear bursts have modelled earth media as isotropic continua. The objectives of the study were to explicitly model joint sets in the Lagrangian SHEP code, and to explore the mechanisms and effects caused by joints in rock media. To model a typical joint system in the 2-D code, periodic slide lines were introduced to represent horizontal joints. Vertical joints were represented in axisymmetric solutions by columns of weakened cells, while a third joint set was simulated by allowing no hoop tension to develop. Author
