Abstract:

A three-axis double probe electric field detector has been flown on the OV1-17 satellite in a circular polar orbit near the noon-midnight meridional plane at an altitude of about 400 km. The detector was sensitive to electric fields in the frequency range from dc to about 500 hertz. Thirty-seven orbits of vector electric field measurements were obtained for analysis during the month of April, 1969. The purpose of this letter is to present evidence that turbulent low frequency electric field fluctuations are intimately associated with the disturbed F region ionosphere, spread F, and scintillations of radio stars and satellites.
