A field experiment was conducted to determine whether a circular bracketing sight, framing the front sight on a standard rifle, could enhance the effectiveness of the rifle system in short range, quick reaction type engagements. Two bracket sizes 1.32 and 2.64 inches in diameter were mounted on M16A1 rifles. Targets at ranges of 25 and 50 yards, were exposed individually in random sequence for 1.6 seconds. Ten enlisted infantrymen each fired 20 rounds at the targets using each bracketing sight and an unmodified control sight. Results showed that a 23 increase in hits resulted with the smaller bracketing sight. Author
