Abstract:

Samples from used transformer oils working under various conditions for a period of 1-26 years have been examined. By means of the used oils, neutralizing numbers and copper content ppm have been determined. For comparison purposes the author took a certain used transformer oil and refined it with furfural and sulfuric acid. It was found that the soluble copper salts strongly catalyze the oxidizing processes in transformer oils. It has been also established that the copper content in used or aged oils is the determining factor for the possible reuse of the oil.
