The report concludes that distribution-free DF methods of signal detection can provide a constant false-alarm rate for communications systems. It describes two DF methods which can easily be implemented and analyzed. DF methods are shown to require only slightly higher signal levels approximately 2-dB SNR than optimum procedures for which it is assumed that the probability distribution of the data is known.
