It is the purpose of the paper to describe work that has been carried out on the development of a three-phase pulsating flow hydraulic control system. In contrast to conventional continuous flow systems, where the fluid flow is unidirectional, fluid flow in a pulsating system is bidirectional and has an average value of zero. More than one fluid can be used in the system, each fluid being confined within a section of the system by isolators. In the study which is reported a detailed description is given of the design of the system and its components. It is followed by the description of an experimental investigation that was carried out to determine the performance characteristics of the components and the system, particularly that of efficiency.
