The basic idea employed by COLORMATRIX involves using the thermal properties of cholesteric liquid crystals have the property of selectively reflecting different wavelengths of incident white light as their temperature is changed. This phenomenon is reversible and the spectrum of the reflected light is a function of both the chemical composition and the temperature. Since liquid crystals are light reflecting devices, low power consumption and high contrast are their main advantages however, their reflectance is low. Author
