The paper examines Australias and New Zealands relations with the countries of Asia. A brief historical sketch is followed by a discussion of the significant shift in recent years toward increasing contact and cooperation with Asian states. Several important determinants are discussed including geographical proximity, trade and commercial activities, and strategic considerations. Ethic and cultural dissimilarities are noted which have impeded progress toward closer ties.
