If a non-destructive test could be devised for measuring the mechanical properties of steel, the cost of making and breaking Charpy, tensile and fatigue bars could be saved. In addition, the mechanical properties could be determined for areas which are now practically impossible, such as along a gun tube where there is not enough surplus material to obtain these bars. This investigation shows a correlation between coercivity, a magetic property of steel, and some of the mechanical properties. Unfortunately the departure from ideal, linear correlations prevents the immediate application of this process. Author
