Abstract:

Response of aortic and atrial fibers was determined in dogs when whole blood was transfused until heart failure. Maximum atrial receptor discharge rate occurred when blood volume increased by 80 to 100 percent. In another series of experiments urine sodium was measured while hypertonic sodium chloride was injected into the third ventricle of the brain with saline infused intravenously. Urinary sodium exceeded intravenous sodium. Additional studies on key reflex mechanisms in control of blood volume are mentioned in detail in the report. Author
